You cannot put a dollar figure on the damage Pharma has done by not being able to patent the stuff that actually prevents disease/degeneration.
The FDA works for them, not for you.
I’m a dentist, we’ve known about this for decades. And yet it’s still prescribed. I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. And, yep! My PCP offered this as one of my options.
It's not just your jaw in danger. Years ago I took Fosamax for two weeks, woke up in so much pain I thought I would have to go to the hospital. Told my doctor I wasn't going to take this. She wanted to put me on something "milder". It was like WTF? I left that doctor. I was told I can't fix this myself. I'm thinking "Watch me". I fixed it myself. It bothered my swallowing as well. You could choke to death on this.

The dental community has known about this for years but we are ignored and dismissed by doctors and pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately the side effects are irreversible and even if you stop these drugs even one dose can permanently alter your bone metabolism, that is, shut it down. Osteoporosis is not a reason to use these drugs: osteoporotic bones that break DO heal, but bone that has been altered by these drugs does not. My mother had terrible osteoporosis and one fall shattered her pelvis into many pieces, and her vertebrae. However she healed nicely and was able to walk and be pain free within 6mos. Had she been on any of these drugs, she would have never healed. And bones DO break on these drugs, in fact the risk of femur fractures is increased on these drugs. The only justification for these drugs would be metastatic cancer in the bone, but that’s a life prolonging move. Not one that anyone with any other options should consider.
My doctor prescribed me this drug. I mentioned it to a friend who is a doctor. She warned me of this and I found a better way to build bone. Resistance exercise. Vitamin D3 with K2 and vitamin A and magnesium. Two years later I had gained back the lost bone and was age appropriate.
I have seen a case of this and it is really bad (not a cancer patient ...not even recognised as due to bisphosphonate related by her dentist !) ....and you are right 20 years ago an orthodontist told me she was seeing many more cases of this on low dose than the literature suggested which at that time was touted as 1 in a million type risk …

I have trigeminal neuralgia already and arguing with my doctors about the reason why I won't take these meds have gotten me to the point of high blood pressure from medical PTSD. I was lucky and had surgery that made the trigeminal neuralgia tolerable without meds most of the time. This is the hard no for me. So now I will have more data to take in with me next month.
I declined Zometa a few years ago. I have received Lupron for 3-4 years, Xtandi for a year and a half, Zytiga with 10mg Prednisone for about 8 months, two types of chemo 9 cycles total all with 10 mg Prednisone - all of these risk osteoporosis but I've weight-trained at the gym for about 4 years and taken calcium, magnesium, vitamins D3 and K2 at non-excessive levels. My DEXA scans show slowly increasing osteopenia but now I'm past the various oral (Xtandi and Zytiga) and intravenous chemotherapies with their accompanying steroid (Prednisone), I now have only the Lupron affecting my bones' ability to regenerate normally (it stops the production of testosterone by the testicles). One of the newest and most promising drugs is what I am receiving now (Pluvicto). No steroids with Pluvicto. So I think I have successfully avoided osteoporosis so far despite my oncologist's fears. I'm now taking a cal-mag formula that contains calcium from sea algae for improved absorption.
They wanted to put my 92 year old mom on Fosamax just today. Thankfully, we read the warning about seeing your dentist regularly. My mom is already missing several teeth and had two bust off at the gum line. No way is she going to take this garbage now. I asked about Estrogen instead and the NP said, "it's too risky." And having your jaw bones die isn't risky? 😮🙄

Take this stuff. It is a miracle. I had a second neck surgery at 45 C-3 on June 13th. Was a vegan for a long time and former smoker. First fusion from C-4 to C-7 took years to recover then I started taking xxxx-xx to get ready for top level to be replaced and the doctor said it takes 6-12 months for bone to grow.

I've been taking Bone-Up by Jarrow Formulas for years. Several years ago I was diagnosed with osteopenia, the condition that preceeds osteoporosis. So I started taking this every day religiously. At some point my osteopenia was reversed and now my bone density is within the normal range.
I do a lot of weight bearing exercise which helps build bone, and along with this, I did something that I didn't think was possible which was to reverse my thinning bone loss. I also walk two miles a day most days. So it is possible to reverse bone loss if you are determined to do it and put in time exercising and taking Jarrow Bone-Up. I wont' stop taking this for life.

Very happy so far. Purchased because I am concerned with my bones and teeth. Had a severe toothache recently, went to the dentist and was told there I should have it pulled or root canal + crown. I've had pain in the tooth for about 6 months off and on but it recently got very bad. Took the antibiotics prescribed by the doctor and pain pills for a few days and scheduled to have it pulled (no dental insurance at this time and did not want to suffer with the pain). I do feel that the saliva in my mouth at the correct alkalinity is important but if you are missing the minerals needed for teeth and bone building then it will not be successful. I feel that my teeth are healthier, its been about 3 weeks. That does seem fast but I avoid sugar except for the bit in my coffee at that pulls calcium from your teeth and bones into your bloodstream and therefore weakens them when your sugar levels go up. So healthy diet and supplements. Also, my kids have commented on my teeth being whiter than usual.
